A team of researchers at Advanced Cell Technology, the University of Illinois-Chicago and the Mayo Clinic on Tuesday published a study on-line in the journal Blood that describes a modern process of creating red River blood cells from human embryonic stem cells, the AP/Google.com reports. According to the research team, the red pedigree cells created through the process behaved the same way as natural cells in laboratory tests. Researchers said that in the future the process could lead to mass production of bolshie blood cells for transfusions (Ritter, AP/Google.com, 8/20).
However, some experts said that certain improvements are needful before the red roue cells created through the process could become a "realistic alternative" to cells provided by donors, the Los Angeles Times reports (Kaplan, Los Angeles Times, 8/20). Robert Lanza, scientific director for ACT, aforesaid that researchers hope to modify the process to create red blood cells from pluripotent stem cells, which ar made through skin cells. Current federal policy does not let federal funding for embryotic stem cell research on cell lines created on or earlier Aug. 9, 2001, and Lanza said that researchers have had problems with funding (Fox, Reuters, 8/19).

Depp donates $2m to children's hospital
Johnny Depp paid a secret visit to London's Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital on Sunday - and donated $2m of his own money to thank staff for saving his young daughter's life.
The 'Sweeney Todd' star arrived unexpectedly at the hospital, where his eight-year-old daughter Lily-Rose was treated last year when her kidneys failed.
Last week, the actor - who has two children with his partner Vanessa Paradis - invited five Great Ormond Street doctors and nurses to the party for the London premiere of his film 'Sweeney Todd'.
Last November, unknown to the public, Depp spent four hours at the hospital telling bedtime stories to patients dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow after having his 'Pirates of the Caribbean' costume flown over from Los Angeles.
In March last year, Lily-Rose, Depp's oldest child, spent nine days at Great Ormond Street after E.coli poisoning led to the failure of her kidneys.
Filming at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire had to be put on hold as her condition worsened so much it was feared she might not live.
Depp, who on Sunday was named Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes for his role in 'Sweeney Todd', later said of the scare: "It was the most frightening thing we have ever been through. It was hell.
"But the magic is that she pulled through beautifully. Great Ormond Street was terrific, a great hospital."

Equally rooted in gospel, person and hip-hop, 112 was the first and most successful urban vocal mathematical group to emerge from Sean "Bouffant" Combs' Bad Boy Records roll. Not only was the group's eponymous 1996 debut popular, only the group could be heard on records by such Bad Boy artists as Puff Daddy. Unlike most artists on Bad Boy, 112's range was clean, virgin and wholesome, which helped the grouping cross over to a more mainstream audience.
The four members of 112 -- Marvin, Daron, Q and Mike -- met each other piece attending high school in Atlanta, Georgia. The quadruple began to bring gift shows at school and local churches, finally gaining the attending of Courtney Sills and Kevin Wales, wHO before long became the group's managers.
